SOAPBOX world-premiere

The Australian Brass Quintet's performance as part of the 2011 Soft Soft Loud Chamber Music Series sees the world-premiere of Iain Grandage's Soapbox.
Soapbox for the ABQ; takes as its starting point the shipwreck coast, & the nascent explorations, accidental & not, of 16th and 17th Century Dutch sailors - focusing primarily on the mutiny on the Batavia after running aground at the Abrolhos Islands in the Indian Ocean during 1629. Blisteringly virtuosic in character, the work periodically separates individual performers from the rest of the quintet, having them play from a metaphorical soapbox in the centre of the group. Whilst in that position, their material, via a microphone & loop station (a modern day megaphone, if you will), is replayed, looped & electronically treated to create worlds within worlds of texture that alternates between representing elements of the lives of the participants, but also the ocean itself.
